LinkedIn Post (Text-Only, Teaser)

GitHub Copilot started training on my code. Not opt-in. Not a checkbox. Just: your prompts now belong to us — unless you noticed this buried in a changelog and turned it off.

I left that afternoon.

The trust broke in five minutes. And once broken, I couldn’t unsee the rest: locked to one provider, opaque about data, paying to be the product.

That’s not ownership. It’s tenancy.

I went looking for alternatives. Warp wanted a separate subscription. OpenCode worked great — until three weeks into every billing cycle, the spinner stopped.

Same pattern everywhere: leave one locked-in tool, find another.

The best AI development environment is the one you can take apart and rebuild. That realization sent me somewhere unexpected.

• Addendum: The March 25 announcement included the opt-out toggle. GitHub later clarified the label (“Allow GitHub to use my data for AI model training”) and confirmed future data won’t be used after opting out. Still opt-out not opt-in, but if commenters ask — this addresses the original concern. Noted in full blog post.
